FLYING YANKEE RESTORATION UPDATE
1.) TRUCK ASSEMBLIES:
The
assembly process of the Flying Yankee’s four truck assemblies is well underway
and the four restored truck assemblies should be completed in a matter of weeks
- by the end of September! While the
final assembly, painting and inspection (including Amtrak certification) should
take place over the next few weeks, we understand that the Flying Yankee’s four
truck assemblies should be delivered to the Hobo Railroad in Lincoln, NH
in early October 2007.
2.) PAINTING:
We’re
excited to let you know that Mr. Don Pillsbury, owner of the Pillsbury Sign Co.
in Hopkinton, MA where he’s been in business since 1969,
has volunteered his talents to repaint all the signage on the Flying Yankee –
to include the famous Boston & Maine / Maine Central sign boards on both
sides of the train’s Power Car! Don is
an extremely talented artist and has already begun by repainting the original
Flying Yankee name boards which will be re-installed on both sides of the
Observation Car when they’re complete.
Following
the completion of the Observation Car’s name boards, Don will then reproduce
the five different name plates that once dressed the streamlined nose of the
Flying Yankee (Flying Yankee; Mountaineer; Cheshire; Minuteman and
Businessman), the famous 6000 number plates that appear on both sides of the
Power Car and eventually, the large Boston & Maine / Maine Central sign
boards which will adorn each side of the Flying Yankee’s Power Car. By the way, all the paint work that Don is
doing on the Flying Yankee is being done by hand – just as it was done in 1935
when the Flying Yankee first entered service!
Needless
to say, we’re extremely appreciative of the tremendous undertaking Don has
offered to take on in recreating the signage on the Flying Yankee. If
everything goes as we hope it will, we’ll have a special ceremony in June 2008
to recognize not only Don’s efforts, but to unveil his incredible work. If you’d like to learn more about Don and the
Pillsbury Sign Co., please visit his web site at: www.pillsburysign.com or feel free to give
him a call at (508) 435-3946.
FLYING YANKEE SILVER NUGGET
We’d like to thank our good friend and longtime supporter
of the Flying Yankee, Mr. Bob Caron from Northborough,
MA for this month’s wonderful Flying
Yankee Silver Nugget submission. As
you’ll read below, Bob’s provided us with a copy of a February 5, 1935 press
release highlighting the fact that the Flying Yankee exceeded 100mph during an
acceptance run in Philadelphia, PA for the Boston and Maine and Maine Central
Railroads. Thanks Bob!
- FLYING YANKEE TOPS 100 MILES PER HOUR -
B & M Railroad Streamline Train Tested at Philadelphia
PHILADELPHIA, February 5, 1935 (Associated Press) --
The Flying Yankee, first stainless steel streamline train to be built for an
Eastern railroad, streaked 101 miles an hour today in its acceptance run for
the Boston and Maine and Maine Central railroads. Engineers who designed the Yankee expect it
to reach a speed of 120 miles an hour in later runs and to maintain cruising
speeds of between 90 and 100 miles an hour. The new train will be placed in
service between Boston and Bangor, Me. The Yankee, a mate mechanically of the
Burlington Zephyr, is powered with a 600-horsepower Diesel engine mounted in
the first of four articulated trucks.
Officials of the Boston and Maine - Maine Central were gratified with
the performance. They included J. W. Smith, vice president and general manager,
and J. W. Rimmler, a vice president of both railroads. The present running time between Boston and Bangor,
six hours and 50 minutes for the 250-mile run, will be cut to four hours and 25
minutes, officials say.
If you happen to have some interesting information
pertaining to the Flying Yankee that you’d like us to consider using in the
Silver Nugget section of the Friends of the Flying Yankee monthly E-Newsletter,
please send the information in an E-mail to: paulgiblin@usa.net
and we’ll be glad to take a look at it.
Who knows, your information could very well end up right here on the
pages of the Friends of the Flying Yankee E-Newsletter as well!

THE FLYING YANKEE’S MISSION: EDUCATION, ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT & TOURISM
1.) EDUCATION:
We plan to develop a
series of educational programs for Elementary, Middle and High School aged
students which will focus on the history as well as the future of
railroading. These programs will be
taught onboard the Flying Yankee during the late Fall, Winter and Spring once
the restoration has been completed. Our
hope is that the exposure to this series of hands-on programs will create an
excitement in the students which will result in some of them possibly going on
to college or technical school once they complete high school where they could
have an impact on the expanded use of rail for passenger service in the coming
years.
2.) ECONOMIC
DEVELOPMENT:
Our plan calls for the
Flying Yankee to be operated for a season at a time during the late Spring,
Summer and early Fall in various regions of the State of New Hampshire once the restoration has been
completed. In doing so, we fully expect
businesses in the regions where the Flying Yankee is operating will directly
benefit from the increased tourism traffic created as a result of the Flying
Yankee operating there, especially in the areas of retail, lodging and
restaurants.
3.) TOURISM:
Given that the Flying
Yankee will be the only train of this type to ever operate again once the
restoration is complete, we fully expect that countless rail fans, historians,
artists, individuals and families interested in exploring something new and exciting
will find riding aboard the Flying Yankee to be an experience worth traveling
to New Hampshire for – especially given that it will eventually operate at
various areas around the State of New Hampshire!
DON’T FORGET…. PLEASE TELL YOUR FRIENDS, CO-WORKERS & FAMILY ABOUT US!

SUPPORT THE FLYING YANKEE RESTORATION
EFFORT THROUGH GIFTS OF STOCK
Given the growth in the value of stock over time, many donors
are reviewing their investments as they consider charitable gifts. There are many benefits to giving stock:
federal tax laws provide that one can give an appreciated asset and take an
immediate income tax deduction for the current fair market value of the asset,
in addition to avoiding capital gains taxes.
If you have an account in a brokerage firm, you can simply ask your
broker to transfer stock from your account to our Flying Yankee Restoration
Group account – it’s really very easy.
If you decide to make a gift to the Flying Yankee Restoration
Group to support the restoration of the Flying Yankee through the gift of stock,
all we ask is that you please notify us in advance of your intent. Once your
stock is transferred to the Flying Yankee Restoration Group’s account, we’ll
confirm your gift by way of a letter. For
more information on making a gift of stock, please contact Paul Giblin by
calling (603) 745-3974 or send an E-mail to paulgiblin@usa.net.

common interest. Monthly meetings cover current topics in railroad news and
offer slide shows, movies or a prominent speaker on a railroading topic. The
Society also sponsors and participates in several train trips each year. Every February the Society presents its
annual “Amherst Railway Society Railroad Hobby Show” on the grounds of the Eastern States
Exhibition Center
(the Big E) in West Springfield,

FLYING YANKEE SILVER NUGGET
Did you know that the Flying Yankee (B&M #6000) was
one of the very first passenger trains in the United States to offer the comfort
of heat and air conditioning to its passengers?
It’s a fact - the Flying Yankee had sealed safety-glass windows in all three
of its cars and offered state-of-the-art heating and air conditioning as
standard fare from 1935 until it was retired in July 1957.
In addition, the Flying Yankee’s passengers enjoyed
the convenience of relaxed dining at their seats as meals ranging from deli
sandwiches, salads, soups and chowders were freshly prepared in the Flying
Yankee’s “modern” onboard Galley which was located in the Power Car and then
delivered to passengers at their seats!

FLYING YANKEE OPEN
HOUSE SCHEDULED FOR AUGUST 4, 2007
AT THE HOBO
RAILROAD IN LINCOLN, NH
North Woodstock, NH – Officials with
the Flying Yankee Restoration Group, Inc., located in North
Woodstock, NH, announced today
that they will be hosting their third of four Flying Yankee Open House and
Guided Tour events of the summer at the Hobo Railroad located on Rt. 112 in Lincoln, NH
on Saturday, August 4, 2007 from 10:00am until 4:00pm. The event will take place rain or shine and will
feature 40-minute guided tours of the Flying Yankee’s three cars throughout the
day starting at 10:00am, with the last tour of the day taking place at 3:30pm.
The upcoming Flying
Yankee Open House and Guided Tour event will give folks an up-close opportunity
to view of the historic Art Deco-era streamliner inside and out. Reservations are not required and there will
be no entry fee to enjoy the Guided Tours, however donations
for the Flying Yankee restoration project are encouraged and will be appreciated.
Operated jointly by the Boston
and Maine Railroad and the Maine Central Railroad throughout northern New
England from 1935 to 1957, the Flying Yankee was the second of only three
diesel-electric, 3-car streamliner passenger trains of this type ever
manufactured by the E.G. Budd Company of Philadelphia,
PA. The Flying Yankee was purchased from the
Edaville Railroad in Carver, MA in the early 1990’s by the late Robert S.
Morrell, creator of Story Land and Heritage NH in Glen, NH and donated to the State of New Hampshire in 1995 for the sum of one
dollar.
Now based at the Hobo Railroad in Lincoln, NH
where restoration efforts are underway, the Flying Yankee will be the only
train of this type to ever operate again – anywhere in the world – once the
restoration is complete. Once
operational, the Flying Yankee will also serve as an icon for Education,
Economic Development and Tourism for the State of New Hampshire. The restoration is more than 50% complete at
this time.
To learn more about the upcoming Flying
Yankee Open House & Guided Tour event scheduled for Saturday, August 4,
2007 or how you can support the restoration though a tax-deductible contribution,

FLYING YANKEE SILVER NUGGET
In
this month’s “Flying Yankee Silver Nugget” section, I thought I’d share some technical
information with you regarding the Flying Yankee’s lighting system. This is a topic that’s not often discussed,
but it’s also very interesting as much of the electrical system aboard the
Flying Yankee was cutting-edge in 1935 when the Flying Yankee first entered
service. The technical information below
was extracted from a document written and distributed by the Edward G. Budd Co.
and provides you with a thorough explanation of the Flying Yankee’s lighting
and electrical system. As you might
expect, some of the companies mentioned in the text below don’t exist any
longer. Also, be sure to keep in mind
that the description below was written in 1935:
The
front headlight is a 14-inch, 250-watt, Golden Glow unit made by the Electric
Service Supply Company. The back-up
light is a 9-inch, 40-watt unit made by the same manufacturer. The marker and classification lights are
Pyle-National airplane-wind lights in housings made by the Budd Company. These lights are all built into the body of
the train.
All
lights inside the cars and also all auxiliary apparatus are controlled through
General Electric load centers. Indirect
lighting is used in the three forward passenger sections and diffusing glass
over the windows in the lounge. Electric
Service Supplies Company dome lights are used in the vestibules and Safety
deep-bowl units are used in the buffet (Galley) and baggage sections.
Main
electric wiring circuits are all carried under the floor. A large junction box is located near each end
and these boxes are connected by a rectangular metal wiring duct built into the
car. Circuits from the end of the cars
to the junction boxes and also branch circuits are carried in thin-wall steel
conduit fitted with Appleton Unilets.
Okonite insulated wire is used for train-line wiring. Insulated wire for branch circuits was
supplied by the National Electric Products Company.
FLYING YANKEE RESTORATION UPDATE
The
restoration work on the Flying Yankee’s four truck frames and their various
components continues to move forward.
The brand new wheels, axles and bearings manufactured for us by ORX in Pennsylvania have been delivered to the New Hampshire
Central Railroad (NHCRR) in North
Stratford, NH and the
final repairs to the trucks and assorted components are underway. Throughout the remainder of June and July,
the technicians at the NHCRR will be busy completing repairs to the truck
frames and various components. The
assembly process is estimated to get underway sometime in August while the
final assembly, painting and inspection (including Amtrak certification) should
be able to take place in late September if all goes as planned. Then, the completed trucks should be
delivered to the Hobo Railroad in Lincoln,
NH sometime in early October. In the meantime, the FYRG’s Mechanical
Committee is continuing their work on developing and finalizing the specification
for the Flying Yankee’s traction motors, replacement engine and generator.

Returning
to the window seat
Written by: Lorna Colquhoun for the New Hampshire Union Leader on June 25, 2007
The one and only time Charles Downing
ever rode on the Flying Yankee, it was the midnight run between Boston and Portsmouth
one fall night in 1936, when he was 18.
Downing's second time aboard the legendary train that ran throughout
northern New England for over two decades came
Friday, after his sons set up the surprise visit as a Father's Day
present. "This is neat,"
Downing said, with a catch in his voice. "This is the best present."
More than 70 years may separate the two
visits, but he remembers every moment of that midnight ride. "I went to the circus in Boston," said Downing, 89, of South Berwick, Maine.
"I went down on the steam train out of Dover, but I had the chance to come back on
the Flying Yankee." He grew up
around trains - his father was the stationmaster in Rollinsford for many years
"and I'd go with him" as a boy, spending hours talking to the
crew. When the Flying Yankee began
plying the tracks of the Maine Central Railroad and the Boston
and Maine Corp. in 1935, Downing was so taken with the design and speed of it,
he would often watch it come down the tracks near his home, late at night, on
its way to Portland. He could only ride it in his dreams.
"This baby came along and it was
off-limits," he said. "I was a kid and I had no money, plus it was
the middle of the Depression." His
chance to ride came following a trip to the circus in Boston. When it finished, it was close to
midnight and Downing knew if he was ever going to ride the train, which was
hugely popular and often sold out seats, it was going to have to be the
midnight run to Portland. He paid his fare, which he recalls as being
one dollar and change. "I don't
remember the circus at all," he said, but that trip is one he remembered
all his life. "I looked out and
thought to myself, 'That light pole is moving,' until I realized that we were
moving," he recalled. "It was quiet, fast, sleek
- you never heard the engine." Downing
departed the train when it stopped early that morning in Portsmouth
and hitchhiked back to his home in South Berwick.
He would go on to a career in the Army
and later at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, where he retired after 33
years. He never forgot that brief train
ride and it became a part of family history.
After a run of 22 years and more than 2 million miles, the Flying Yankee
was retired in 1957 and went to pasture at the Edaville Railroad in South
Carver, Mass.,
for about 40 years. Downing would bring his family to the tourist attraction
and see the Flying Yankee on display there.
The train, a diesel-powered streamliner with articulated cars, is one of
the last of its kind. For the past decade, it has been undergoing a massive
renovation and it is now at the Hobo Railroad in Lincoln. When the work is complete, likely by
sometime in 2010, it will ride the rails in the state again and become a
traveling educational experience for school children.
On Father's Day, Downing's sons, Larry,
of Wells, Maine and Skip, of Lebanon, NH,
gave him a card with a picture of the train on it, pulled into the Portland
Union Station. "I opened it up and
inside it said that I was invited to visit the Flying Yankee," he said.
"I was speechless. I had been talking for a long time about coming over
here to see it." Downing has kept
track of the restoration efforts of the train over the past decade and hopes to
ride it one more time, in the very seat he sat all those years ago, third from
the rear on the right side by the window.

LINCOLN
ZEPHYR OWNERS CLUB 40TH ANNIVERSARY EVENT PLANNED FOR 2008
I know that everyone isn’t familiar
with the Lincoln Zephyr automobiles which were manufactured by the Lincoln
Division of the Ford Motor Company in the mid 1930-s through the early 1940’s,
but they were extremely popular during the same time the Flying Yankee was
getting started. They were sleek, beautiful
cars powered by enormous 12-cylinder Lincoln
engines. Almost 40 years ago, a few
gentlemen from the Northeast decided to create a club, the Lincoln Zephyr
Owners Club (LZOC), so the owners of these fine automobiles could share
information, parts and knowledge regarding the restoration and upkeep of these
very rare automobiles.
At any rate, the LZOC has been
gathering at various locations around the United States for the past 39 years
and in 2008, for their 40th anniversary, they will be gathering here
in Lincoln, NH for the first ever “Lincolns in Lincoln” event! The Flying Yankee Restoration Group will be
working closely with the members of the LZOC in the planning and organizing of
this exciting event which will take place June 4-8, 2008. In addition, the Lincoln Owners Club (LOC)
will be celebrating their 50th anniversary in 2008 and will be
joining the LZOC here in Lincoln,
NH. | | |
